Austrian landscapes and mountains are highly characteristic for the early work of Alois Arnegger; his winter landscapes fetch up to €14,500 at international auctions

Alois Arnegger was a specialist in the depiction of deeply snow-covered mountain panoramas illuminated by the red light of the setting sun. The present painting reveals a typical view of the Silvretta valley with the characteristic mountain silhouettes in the background. Arnegger interpreted this motif a number of times, but deliberately chose a different point of view. The striking traces in the snow rate as typical characteristics of his compositions and gently refer to the presence of human being.


The painting is signed lower right ‘A. Arnegger’. The canvas is titled on verso on the upper edge ‘Silvretta’. Inspection under UV light reveals areas of retouching, especially to the edges. Besides, the painting is in good overall condition. The size of the stretcher is 70 x 100 cm and the framed dimensions are 89 x 118.5 cm.


Alois Arnegger (1879-1963)

Alois Arnegger was born in Vienna. He completed his studies at the Vienna Academy of Art and attended the classes of Robert Russ (1847-1922) and August Eisenmenger (1830-1907). In the 1920s he travelled through Italy. His most favored motifs were Mediterranean coastal landscapes, like those in Naples, Capri and San Remo, among others. (cbo)
