Austrian painter and stage designer Friedrich Frank (1871-1945) created mainly Viennese views and architectonic subject matters, these rich in detail, but still atmospheric in bright, clear colors and mostly rich scenic staffage, as this watercolor exemplifies.

The watercolor is signed lower right ‘Friedrich Frank’, inscribed lower left ‘Wien – Karlskirche’ and inscribed verso in pencil ‘No. 1926 / Wien Karlskirche – Friedrich Frank XX.’. The painting cardboard is verso professionally mounted in six points reversible under a mat and framed. The watercolor is in very good condition. The frame shows slight traces of use. The sheet measures 42.4 x 33 cm and the total dimensions, including the frame, are 66 x 56 cm.

Friedrich Frank (1871-1945)

Friedrich Frank studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna. There he was together with Hermann Burghart the owner of a joint studio for theater painting and decorative art, which he later ran by himself. He was a painter of war at the Italian front from 1914 until 1918. He undertook journeys to Egypt and Palestine in 1930/31. He was commissioned the design of the Romanian pavilion at the World Fair in Paris in 1935. (tm)
