Description

45. Dvorák, Antonín Leopold. Cabinet photograph signed, (6.62 x 4.25 in.; 168 x 108 mm.), [London, late 1800s]; bottom right corner chipped not affect signature or image, mounting remnants on verso.

A rare signed cabinet photograph of Antonín Dvorák, by Negretti & Zambra, Crystal Palace.

Following the nationalist example of Bedrich Smetana, Dvorák frequently employed aspects, specifically rhythms, of the folk music of Moravia and his native Bohemia (then parts of the Austrian Empire and now constituting the Czech Republic). Dvorák’s own style has been described as the fullest recreation of a national idiom with that of the symphonic tradition, absorbing folk influences and finding effective ways of using them.
