136. Schubert, Franz Peter. Autograph music of two songs, “Tischlerlied” (Carpenter’s Song) D.274 and “Totenkranz für ein Kind” (Wreath for a Dead Child) D.275, on recto and verso of a single leaf, each dated at upper right, 25 August 1815, each notated for “Singst[imme]” (voice) and “Pianoforte” on three systems of three staves, “Tischlerlied” comprising 19 bars, the text of the three stanzas transcribed in full autograph, the first stanza interlineally with the music, “Totenkranz für ein Kind” comprising 15 bars, the text of the two stanzas similarly transcribed in autograph, 2 pages (9.12 x 12.5 in.; 232 x 318 mm.), paginated “31” and “32” in red pencil and “18” and “19” in pen later annotations to lower and right margins, noting details relating to authentication and publication, probably in the hand of Johann Wolf of the music publishers C. A. Spina, circa 1864-1866; minor wear to right and lower margins, small brown spot on verso.

Two radiant Lieder composed on the same day by the 18-year old Schubert.

The two complete songs for solo voice and piano entirely in the hand of Franz Schubert with lyrics in German.

“Tischlerlied” (Carpenter’s Song) D.274; date of composition 25 August 1815 (first publication 1850). The librettist is unknown. The words to all three verses are included on the page:

Mein Handwerk geht durch alle Welt und bringt mir manchen Thaler Geld, dess bin ich hoch vergnügt.
Den Tischler baroucht ein jeder Stand. Schon wird das Kind durch meine Hand in sanften Schlaf gewiegt, in sanften Schalf gewiegt.

Das Bette zu der Hochzeitnacht wird auch durch meinen Fleiss gemacht und Künstlich angemalt.
Ein Geizhals sei auch noch so Karg, er braucht am Ende einen Sarg, und der wird gut bezahlt, und der wird gut bezahlt.

Drum hab’ ich immer frohen Muth und mache meine Arbeit gut, es sei Tisch oder Schrank. Und wer bei mir brav viel bestellt und zahlt mir immer baares Gled, dem sag’ ich grossen Dank, dem sag’ ich grossen Dank

This appears to be the original manuscript of both works. The songs were not to be published until 1850 and 1895 respectively––long after Schubert’s death.
