Description
Mid 18th century, 215 x 120 cm, Central Asia, Uzbekistan
This rare cover in the felt appliqué technique was probably made in Uzbekistan in the mid 18th century. Only a small number of comparable pieces has survived. The white-ground field displays a repeat of masterful design - offset rows of eight-pointed stars enclosing circular motifs and cross devices containing cross motifs. In ornamentation and style, it is reminiscent of the Timurid period mosaic designs seen in Uzbekistan as architectural decoration on mosques and other public buildings. - Signs of age and wear, missing sections, the stitches have been lost in various places. Backed with a blue felt fabric. Provenance: Signora Gallo Collection
