Description
Ca. 1700, 157 x 124 cm, West Anatolia, Ushak region
Most of the carpets of this kind, which were produced in various West Anatolian weaving centres chiefly for export to Europe, have survived in the Protestant churches of Transylvania. Although rather different in design, this fact has led to the entire group being summarily labelled "Transylvanian rugs". This example presenting a double niche design and a red border of cartouches was probably woven in Ushak. A comparable piece belongs to the collection of the Black Church of Brasov (inv. no. 265). - Extremely worn, repiled ends and sides, many repaired and repiled sections.
