Description
Ca. 1900, 170 x 110 cm, South Caucasus, Azerbaijan
Finely woven in the sumakh technique, this cover (shadda) is a weaving by the Tat group. Their settlements were located on the Apsheron peninsula in the hinterland of Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan. The field design consists of horizontal stripes of different width and ornamentation. The large peacocks and the slender botehs surrounded by chains of small flowers are typical designs of Tat weavings. The narrow dividing borders of syrga motifs are familiar from Shahsavan flatweaves. The so-called "crab" border was part of the standard repertoire of Caucasian rugs. - Very well preserved.
