Description
First third 20th century, 189 x 114 cm, South West Persia, Fars
Displaying a large white-ground diamond at the centre of a blazing red field serrated at the sides, this Qashqa'i nomad gabbeh derives its effect from its sharply contrasting colours. Unlike the finely woven Qashqa'i pile rugs whose floral designs often hark back to West Persian models, and which were chiefly produced for sale, barter or in payment of tribute, the coarsely woven old gabbehs were destined for home use. Like the tribe's flatweaves they represent the oldest Qashqa'i design traditions. - Good condition, original side and end finishes, only slight signs of wear.
