Perhaps the Austrian painter has discovered this image on a trip to Italy. He draw the Doge's Palace in Venice, lying in the shade is captured with its decorative Gothic arches and the adjacent St. Mark's Basilica in the background under a bright yellow sky, in warm tones and loose, fluid stroke. The composition is structured skillfully and transported a balanced and harmonious mood.


The painting is signed lower right ‘-L ALTON-‘. It bears a small piercing in the left middle, occasional cracks in the paint layer and slight framing traces. The Impression overall is good. The frame shows occasional small material losses and is overall in good condition with small signs of wear. The painting measures 68.5 x 89 cm. The framed dimensions are 90 x 110 cm.


Lois Lupp Alton (1894-1972)

Born in Bohemia, Lois Lupp Alton spent his childhood in Innsbruck. He studied music, fulfilled a four-year combat duty in the First World War and then began to study law, but dropped out. In the early 1920s he studied part time at the Munich Art Academy under Constantin Gerhardinger and August Herzog and in Denmark with Johan Sklovgaard. From 1925 Alton worked as a freelance painter in Innsbruck and in 1926 became a member of the Secession Innsbruck and in 1933 of the artist group ‘Der Neue Bund’. Alton’s work, influenced by the late impressionism, is very diverse, with a preference for landscapes, rural genre paintings and portraits. (fea)
