The painting presented here was created by the Austrian painter Franz Gruber-Gleichenberg in 1914. Represented is a rolling field landscape with a birch grove. The field in the foreground is still covered with a light blanket of snow on which some light of the incident sun is gently reflecting here and there.
The painting is signed and dated lower left ‘Gruber 1914’ and is inscribed by hand on the stretcher ‘Gruber Karlsruhe. Birken im Schnee’. It is overall in good condition. The varnish is slightly yellowed. At the edges slight abrasions caused by the framing. The image measures 58 x 50 cm.
Franz Gruber-Gleichenberg (1886-1940)
Franz Gruber was born in 1886 in Bad Gleichenberg. He trained as a painter at the art school in Graz before he began his studies at the State Academy of Fine Arts in Karlsruhe and the Academy in Munich under Ludwig Dill. He undertook several study trips to Italy and Dalmatia, among others. During the First World War he worked as a war artist. His artistic subjects were mainly landscapes in different seasons as well as Austrian mountain landscapes. (cru)
