Good condition
Harmonious composition of fresh coloring by the German painter Friedrich Karl Gotsch; the auction record for a signed paper work by the artist is currently set at more than €11,000.

Dominated by fresh green the German artists has captured a here a wide North German landscape. Several houses, a heap of straw and a church in the background set compositional and color accents with yellow, blue and red and thus create a very beautiful, harmonious composition.


The pastel on Arches MBM Ingres laid paper is hinged to a mat at the reverse upper sheet corners. The sheet is darkened and shows aside from technique-related pin holes in the corners slight scuffing, presumably due to a former framing. Underneath the reverse mounts there are several remains of former mountings. The condition overall is good. The frame is in good condition, too, with slight signs of wear. The sheet measures 48 x 63 cm. The framed dimensions are 73 x 85 cm.


Friedrich Karl Gotsch (1900-1984)

Friedrich Karl Gotsch initially studied economics, philosophy and art history in Kiel, but at the same time took painting lessons with the expressionist painter Hans Ralfs. In 1920 Gotsch went to Dresden to study at the local Academy of Arts. In the beginning Otto Hettner was his teacher, 1921-1923 Gotsch was a master student under Oskar Kokoschka. After graduation, he stayed for longer time in New York and Paris and also traveled to Italy and southern France. During World War II Gotsch was drafted into military service as a translator. Aafter the war, he worked primarily in cultural policy, until in 1951 he turned back to painting. Gotsch’s early work is coined by the Expressionist influence of his teachers. After the war, Gotsch dealt with cubism and abstraction, and then developed his own, late expressionist style (fea)
