The work presented here, executed in gouache on paper, was created by Claus Friedrich Bergen in 1915. Bergen continues the tradition of the Marine painting. With the outbreak of World War II, he devoted himself exclusively to marine painting, and made him the official war artist ever since the Battle of Jutland between Britain and the German Empire in 1916. The mainly blue and grey toned composition is characterized by a strikingly realistic image conception and the use of bright, slightly cool acting light.



The work is signed, dated and located bottom right ‘Claus Bergen 1915 Wilhelmshaven’. The sheet is laid down on light cardboard and overall slight curled due to the technique. Occasional some color flaking at the edges, otherwise overall of good impression and fresh colors. The sheet size is 67.5 x 97.5 cm, the framed dimensions are 92 x 123 cm.



Claus Bergen (1885-1964)

Claus Bergen studied at the Munich Academy of Fine Arts with Carl von Marr. He went on study trips to England and in the United States. Bergen worked as a war painter of the High Seas Fleet and was honored with several awards for his work. His circa 450 illustrations for Karl May's ‘Illustrierte Reiseerzählungen’ (Ilustrated Travel Stories) are less known. The German Maritime Museum in Bremerhaven paid tribute to his life's work with a retrospective held in 1982.
