One of Gioldasis’s typical representation of the landscape of his Greek homeland; landscape paintings by the artist fetch over €12,000 at international auctions

The present landscape depicts the homeland of the Greek painter Dimitris Gioldasis. With subdued shades of brown and green and partly rough brushwork, the artist created a classical composition, in which he manages to capture the Mediterranean atmosphere of Thessaly. The Greek countryside, which Gioldasis repeatedly portrayed in his works, remained the source of his inspiration throughout his career.

The painting is signed in Greek ‘D. Gioldasis’ lower right and on the reverse. It is in good condition. There are retouchings, mainly along the edges and some scattered inside the depiction. In the upper left corner and the lower right area two large color losses were retouched. The canvas is a little waterstained on the back. The frame shows some wear. The framed work measures 59.5 x 74.5 cm, the stretcher frame measures 50 x 65 cm.

Dimitris Gioldasis (1897-1993)

Dimitris Gioldasis spent his childhood and youth on a tobacco plantation and has always been deeply rooted in the nature of his homeland. From 1914, he attended art school in Athens. During his studies, he already received several awards for his work and in 1922 he had his first exhibition. Gioldasis traveled to Paris, London and New York. From 1966 he settled in Karditsa, a village in south-western Thessaly. The Athens National Gallery honored the artist with a retrospective in 1977. Gioldasis created primarily landscapes along with some portraits and genre scenes, finding his motifs in the landscape of Thessaly.
