Item Details
Description
Bronze
Germany, c. 1944
Ludwig Kasper (1893-1945) – Austrian sculptor
Monogram ‘K’ on the back
Height: 54.5 cm
Very good condition
Provenance: Private collection, Germany (by donation of the artist’s widow, Ottilie Kasper)
Expressive female bust boasting the artist’s typical sober use of forms; bronze sculptures by the artist fetch over €23,000 on the international auction market

The present bronze is a work by the Austrian artist Ludwig Kasper. The bust is presumably a variant of Kasper's ‘Große Kniende’ from 1944. Inspired by his travels to Greece and Rome, Kasper approached the sculptures from Classical Antiquity during the 1940s and created works based on the ideal of ancient Greek sculpture. The artist’s bronzes are characterized by a simple, austere form language, with a focus on harmonious proportions and volumes. Here the rough, uneven surface of the bronze is in contrast with the smooth marble bodies of classical sculptures and endows the torso with a contemporary character.

The bronze is monogrammed ‘K’ on the back. It is in very good condition with only slight signs of age. The height measures 54.5 cm.

Ludwig Kasper (1893-1945)

Ludwig Kasper was born in Gurten, Austria, in 1893. From 1909 to 1912, he studied sculpture at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich. Afterwards, he worked as soldier. From 1919 to 1915, he continued his studies in Munich. From 1933 to 1943, Kasper mainly worked in the Klosterstraße 75 in Berlin, in a studio community together with Gerhard Marcks, Käthe Kollwitz and Hermann Blumenthal. He received several fellowships, amongst others in Greece, and in the Villa Massimo in Rome. From 1943 to 1944, Kasper worked as professor at the Academy of Fine Arts of Braunschweig. In World War Second, his apartment and studio were bombed. He therefore moved back to Austria.
