Drawing executed in confident lines by the Russian painter Boris Grigorjeff which very nicely shows his drawing skills; the auction record for a pencil drawing by the artist currently set at more than €26,000
With a skillful, confident line the Russian painter has captured a sitting woman in underwear. The decoratively simplified contours are modeled plastically with broad strokes. Thus, this work clearly shows the great drawing skill of the artist.
The pencil drawing is monogrammed lower right in pencil ‘B. G.’. The sheet is overall, partially irregular darkened and bears a tiny nick in the lower edge. It is mounted on a backing board at three spots. The frame is in good condition with minor signs of wear. The sheet measures 31.5 x 24 cm. The framed dimensions are 51 x 42 cm.
Boris Dimitrevitch Grigorjeff (1886-1939)
Boris Dimitrevitch Grigorjeff was born in Moscow. From 1904 he studied at the local Stroganoff Drawing School, and from 1907 to 1912 at the Art Academy in St. Petersburg. He also participated in exhibitions at the Salon of the Impressionists and Mir Issukusstwa club whose member he was. 1918 Grigorjeff was appointed a professor at the Stroganov Academy in Moscow, but fleed the following year, first to Berlin and then moved to Paris in 1921, where he exhibited among others at the Salon d'Automne and the Galerie Bernheim Jeune. Grigorjeffs works are in the collections of many international museums in Moscow, Leningrad, Paris, Venice and in the United States. (fea)
