Description
Measurement: Diameter of mouth 1.625 in., L 4.75 in., H 10.875 in. This was a unusual slender body potted from marbled clay of dark brown and green tone creating an irregular pattern of whorls, covered overall with a translucent straw colored glaze. Marbling, known as jiao tai in Chinese became a popular decorative technique on ceramics of the Tang dynasty, and was applied to a number of different forms, including jars, cups, bowls, dishes and censers. The popularity of marbled wares with the Tang aristocracy was confirmed by the discovery among the items in the tomb of the Tang Priness Yongtai, who was given a grand reinterment in AD 706.
