Arman’s artistic output is especially renowned for its accumulations, in which the artist compiled sets of objects according to a certain principle in wooden or Plexiglas cases. The present work is titled ‘Pouplées’ and assembles 15 baby dolls in a synthetic resin block. Arman often worked with dolls and figures and presented them in many variations, including cut or even destroyed compositions.



One front side of the synthetic resin block is signed lower right ‘arman’ and numbered lower left ‘60/100’. The block is slightly marked with tiny losses of material along the edges and at the corners. The work measures 40.5 x 30.8 x 5.9 cm.



Arman (1928-2005)

Arman, actually Armand Pierre Fernandez, first studied at the École Nationale des Arts Décoratifs in Nice, before studying archeology and oriental art at the École du Louvre in Paris. At the same time he created already paintings inspired by surrealism. The artist became interested in African art and was deeply inspired by works of Serge Poliakoff, Jackson Pollock and Kurt Schwitters. In 1958 he took on the alias Arman and began to experiment with the first accumulations. An exhibition in 1960, for which the artist had the gallery filled with waste, finally lead to his sudden fame. In following years, the artist realized numerous performances and installations. Works by Arman are held at the MoMA in New York, the Hirshhorn Museum in Washington and the Tate Gallery in London. (cbo)
