Description
Alice Pike Barney (1857-1931), designer, chairs, pair, Washington, DC circa 1903, carved and ebonized oak, gilt paint, unsigned, likely executed by Cincinnati Art Carvers, 26"w x 24"d x 57"h, Catalogue Note: These chairs were designed for and used in Barney's Studio House, 2306 Massachusetts Avenue on Sheridan Circle. The entire site (the Barney Studio House and the adjacent 1 ½ story stucco carriage house built in 1911) is listed in the D.C. Inventory of Historic Sites and the National Register of Historic Places. From the Estate of Robert Edwards, Swarthmore, PA.
Condition
Acanthus carved terminals with carved foliate and dramatic stylized sun-burst carved top rails with gilt paint, horizontal carved splat and conforming front stretcher.
