Description
A Coptic textile fragment with intricate detail, Egypt, c. 5th - 6th Century AD. The main part of the fragment is of a very fine linen with a central embroidered strip containing an intricate vine pattern, a fish and a standing male figure. To the side is a medallion containing a youth on horseback with cape flowing behind, a hound running below; all within a double row repeating vine pattern. A nice example of skilled weaving! Roughly 11 ½ in x 10 in (29.3 x 25.4 cm). Ex Virginia private collection.
