Description
A nice Roman orange-ware ceramic lamp, North Africa, c. 4th - 5th Century AD, the discus depicting Hermes holding a caduceus, styled palm motif on the shoulders and channel atop the spout, ring handle and small ring base enclosing a palm-frond in low relief. L: 5 in (12.8cm), W: 3 1/8 in (7.9cm). Intact, light deposits, signs of use in antiquity. Ex Royal Athena Galleries, New York purchased on the Parisian Art Market in April, 2008.
