Later and rather reduced design created by the eminant Italian designer Gio Ponti
The chair ‘Gabriela’ from 1971 is a later design by Gio Ponti. His minimalist design from the 1950s is still recognizable. Only the materials, square steel and black leather, became rather modern and the shape not quite as elegant swinging as before, but scored a cooler effect in the light of postmodernism.
The chair measures 107 x 59 x 60 cm and is in very good condition with minimal signs of age and wear.
Gio Ponti (1891-1979)
Italian architect and designer Gio Ponti studied architecture at the Milan School of Polytechnics. In 1923, he became artistic director of the Richard-Ginori porcelain manufactory. He founded the art, architecture and design magazine Domus in 1928. Initially deemed a neo-classicist, he progressively adopted a Rationalist style. It was only after the war that he created his most famous designs. This includes the 'Superleggera' chair within the field of design, the Pirelli Tower in Milan within architecture, and the Hotel Parco dei Principi on the Sorrento coast for its architecture and interiors.
