Elegant desk with loop type steel tube stand, two boxes with three drawers and a swivel-mounted tray in left, with one key

The design of this desk was executed around 1930. The brothers Hans and Wassili Luckhardt were architects and were close to the ideas of the Bauhaus. Together with Anton Lorenz they also designed steel tube furniture for Thonet. Next to cantilever chairs, this desk was also among their creations. Two boxes with three drawers each are suspended in a loop type stand of chromed steel tubes. As a contrast to the cold steel tubes the boxes are veneered with walnut and palisander. The wooden table plate is covered with sturdy black Bakelite. With a swivel-mounted tray on its left side.

The desk is 75 cm high and 148 x 80 cm wide and deep respectively. It is in very good condition with only minimal traces of use and aging. The Bakelite has slight isolated scratches and is slightly scuffed in places of margins.

Hans (1890-1954) & Wassili Luckhardt (1889-1972)

Born in Berlin, the brothers Hans and Wassili Luckhardt began their collaboration in 1921, after studying at the Technical Universities in Karlsruhe and Berlin. A year later, they realized their first building in Berlin-Westend. In 1927, the first experiments with motion chairs and tubular steel furniture followed. In 1952, Hans Luckhardt received a professorship at the Academy of Fine Arts in Berlin, and in 1956, Wassili became a member of the Berlin Academy of Arts. The work of Hans and Wassili Luckhardt deeply influenced the architecture in postwar Germany.
