This green-patinated bronze lamp with black base is called ‘Ikarus’. In Greek mythology, Ikarus and his father Daedalus build wings for human flight; they attach feathers to a rig with wax. When Ikarus flies too high, the wax melts and he falls to his death. The myth warns against recklessness – against ‘flying too high’ and ‘reaching for the sun’. This lamp combines symbolically the sun, the wings, and the falling Ikarus at its centre.
The lamp is generally in good condition but shows some signs of use. The base is somewhat scratched. The bronze is slightly scuffed in places and exhibits some loss of patina. The brightness control is damaged. The lamp is around 208 cm high.
