Amphora Porcelain Factory (est. 1876)

The Amphora porcelain factory, founded in 1876 by Alfred Stellmacher, produced fine and innovative pottery during the late 19th century and early 20th century. Known especially for their Art Nouveau work, Amphora’s designs were highly detailed and incorporated numerous animal figures into their porcelain. The three main manufacturers of Hans and Carl Reissner, Edward Stellmacher and Rudolf Kessel came together as partners and created works influenced by Art Nouveau, Jugendstil, Grueby and Rookwood. Like the founder who received a gold medal at the 1889 Paris World Exposition, the partners won international acclaim when they were awarded the best in show prize at the 1893 Chicago World’s Fair. In addition to the partners, additional manufacturers have included Ernst Wahliss, Paul Dachsel, Julius Dresser and designers from Imperial Technical School for Ceramics and Associated Applied Arts. After 1905, the manufacturers went on to establish their own operations with retail representation in shops such as Tiffany.
