Rare side table with rich inlay works with typical blossom and leaf motifs
Emile Gallé studied, among others, zoology and botany in Germany, which is why it is no surprise that he became known as one of the main representatives of floral Art Nouveau. He is particularly acclaimed for his glass works, but also for his furniture, which are, along those by Louis Majorelle, masterpieces of French Art Nouveau. This side table shows rich inlay works of exotic woods with typical motifs on the quatrefoil table plate.
The table carries the inlay signature 'Gallé'. Its dimensions are 72.5 x 64 x 46 cm. It is in very good condition with normal traces of age and use such as isolated drycracks to the veneer. The lower shelf is skilfully restored.
Emile Gallé (1846-1904)
The French artist Emile Gallé took over his family’s faience and crystal company in Nancy and specialized in art glassware. In his works of glass he experimented with new techniques of marbling, inclusion, bubbles and overlay. Emile Gallé’s oeuvre is renowned for the harmonic collaboration of technical know-how and creative ingenuity. His art works of glass were reputed through international exhibitions and honors, he also opened further sales rooms in Paris, Frankfurt and London. The family business was continued into the 1930s.
