Part of a awarded living room and bedroom
Dimensions: 54 x 46 x 37 cm

Simple wooden stool of the famous Austro-Hungarian interior designer Sigmund Jaray

The present stool was part of a rewarded living and bedroom dated 1900. The room was designed by the Austro-Hungarian designer Sigmund Jaray, who operated a well-known interior company in Austria-Hungary. The simple and functional style with the sparingly used ornaments is in line with the South German designs by Richard Riemerschmid and drafts by contemporaries of the Vienna Secession, going, with its simplicity, in the direction of the machine furniture programs that followed later. The decor of the room is on display at the Museum of Applied Arts (MAK) in Vienna.

The stool measures 54 x 46 x 37 cm and is in very good condition, showing minor wear.

Sigmund Jaray (1838-1908)

The Romanian Sigmund Jaray (Sigmund Jeitteles) first worked as a carpet weaver. Early on, his talent became apparent in the design drawing. He received artistic inspiration from his regular stays in Vienna. In 1873, he moved to the city with his family. Since the end of the 19th century, he realized numerous interior designs along with his brother Sandor. He focused on the furniture in the Biedermeier style. He received the title ‘k.u.k. Hof-Tapezierer und Decorateur’ [‘Royal and Imperial Court upholsterer and decorator’] and became an imperial furniture manufacturer. During the First World War, the factory produced some of the first European aircrafts. In 1933, the company was dissolved.
