Ensemble in timeless design, originally made for the apartment of Dr. Salzer in Vienna
This ensemble, comprising a twoseater and two arm chairs, was made by Josef Hoffmann in 1914 for the apartment of Dr. Salzer in Vienna. The timeless design solely consists of cube shapes. It is a prime example of the remarkably innovative and trend-setting design ideas that Hoffmann developed while he was active at the Wiener Werkstätte. The wooden frames, lacquered in gray-brown, are upholstered and covered with green velour. The round rivets that fix the covering are of a certain ornamental and decorative character. This ensemble was made by the Austrian furniture designer Wittmann Austria in the second half of the 20th century, who produced the furniture in re-edition.
All parts are 77 cm tall. The sofa is 126 x 68 cm wide and deep respectively, the armchairs each 68 x 68 cm. The ensemble is in very good condition with minimal traces of use sch as small scratches.
Josef Hoffmann (1870-1956)
Josef Hoffmann was the son of intellectual, supportive parents who ensured he received the best possible education at the State Industrial School in Brno and later at the Academy for Fine Arts in Vienna under Otto Wagner. This was where he met Joseph Maria Olbrich, with whom he founded the Vienna Secession in 1897, however, he broke with the group as early as in 1905. He worked as teacher at the arts college from 1899. In 1903 he founded the Vienna Workshop with Fritz Warndorfer and Koloman Moser. He co-founded the German Werkbund and, in 1912, the Austrian Werkbund. He worked as designer and architect and his designs are still extremely popular today.
