Bronze with the motif of a man mounting a winged horse that is about to get away from the globe and its gravitation in shape of a woman

The French tire manufacturer Michelin sponsored the British Empire Michelin Cup, an international competition for long-distance pilots and a spin-off of the Michelin Cup in 1909. A year before it had started on an international level. The trophy in 1912 was the sculpture by Paul Moreau-Vauthier, which renders homage to aviation.



The bronze is signed 'P. Moreau-Vauthier Sclp.' in lower margin and carries the foundry mark and plate 'Susse Fes. Fondeurs Paris'. It is 21 cm high and in very good condition with minimal traces of age and wear.



Paul Moreau-Vauthier (1871-1936)

The sculptor Paul Moreau-Vauthier was born in in Paris in 1871. He was a pupil of his father Augustin Moreau-Vauthier and then studied under G. Thomas. The young sculptor first arouse attention with his sculpture ‘La Parisienne’, which he exhibited in 1900 at the Exposition Universelle in Paris. Paul Moreau-Vauthier also created numerous honor and war memorials.
