Jimmy Carter AN on Speech Drafts
Description
Jimmy Carter Campaign Speech Draft With Notes. Autograph notes on two drafts of a speech to the AFL-CIO convention, September 15, 1976, the same night that Ford made his campaign kick-off speech, also in Michigan. Carter asked his speechwriter, Pat Anderson, for a speech featuring Democratic rhetoric as well as substance to make the news. Carter edited both drafts closely, including adding after a statement of unemployment under Nixon "Later, Gerald Ford was to beat this terrible record" and that "The White House budget alone has increased by over 350% during the past 8 years". One draft is three pages, second 5 pages. VG+
