[Presidential/Andrew Jackson]. Ship Passport signed by Andrew Jackson. Also signed by Secretary of State John Forsyth. Vellum, with engraved vignettes above text. Top is scallop cut. About 15 1/8” x 11 ½” at edges of sheet. Seal is present at lower left, albeit with a relatively minor chip. Lower margin dampstained. Verso has “1836” notation (not visible from image side). 3 tiny bits near corners of verso. Sight condition otherwise near fine. Not examined out of glass. Below is the full text. The blanks filled in by a secretary are denoted with single quotation marks: “By the President of the United States of America/ Suffer the ‘Ship Gladiator of New York Thomas Dritton’ master or commander of the burthen of ‘649. 78/95’ tons or thereabouts mounted with ‘No’ guns navigated with ‘twenty nine’ men/ To Pass with her Company Passengers Goods and Merchandize without any hindrance seizure or molestation the said ‘Ship’ appearing by good testimony to belong to one or more of the Citizens of the United States and to him or them only/ Given under my Hand and the Seal of the United States of America the ‘Nineteenth’ day of ‘February’ in the year of our Lord ‘One thousand ‘eight’ hundred and ‘thirty six.’… State & District of ‘New York’/ Countersigned by ‘David Lyon Jr. Collr:’” Above seal: “Number ‘6.
