A new England nonconformist minister, he produced 30 of these little books from 1835 to about 1860. Abbott was a disciple of Maria Edgeworth and Thomas Day. The phenomenally successful series started by a book agent in Boston, Mass. who found a quantity of wood engravings he thought might be made into a book, sending the proofs to Abbott, who sold the first manuscript ‘The Little Scholar learning to Talk,’to Carter for about $150 in 1835.
