Description
Greece, ca. 3rd to 1st century BCE. Mold-made pottery bowl in rich red and brown hues. Wonderfully intricate impressed designs comprised of palmettes alternating with representations of figures emerging from amphorae with an eight-petaled rosette in the center. This relief decoration was created to mimic bowls of a similar form made from gold or silver. This type of ceramic was a precursor to Terra Sigillata. 4.50"W x 3.00"H (11.43 W x 7.62 H cm)

Provenance: Ex-Private collection of William Dale, a career diplomat stationed in Turkey in the early 1960's, who acquired a vast collection of Greek, Roman and Near-Eastern treasures during his tenure.
