Description
We are very pleased to present this lovely set of Rosenthal hand painted porcelain. We have a 1910-1920 Carmen pattern large floral celery dish with a smoothed scalloped rim. Is is signed by the artist, Thuring, and measures 12.25 x 6.5 x 2 inches deep. The 4 bread & butter plates are in the popular Monbijou pattern, potted ca. 1896 to 1907. These gorgeous plates are also signed by the artist Thuring and measure 5.75 x 5.75 x .75 inches deep. All are in excellent condition, and the entire lot weighs 2# 6 oz. xxxxxxxxxxxx.Monbijou, Bavaria was the mark used on the Monbijou line of china introduced by Rosenthal in 1896, and was one of the earliest Rosenthal examples bearing the R and C crown with crossed swords. The translation of Monbijou is My Jewel and this line of Bavarian china is an eclectic and valuable collectible. Don't be fooled though, as the Monbijou line is not a particular pattern of china, but the Monbijou signifies intensely detailed, scalloped and ruffled shapes of items created in the same mold. History records that Rosenthal created the White Ware china, then sent the majority out to be hand painted using only the most talented artists from around the world. Each artist added their own creativity making each piece unique, and signed and dated the bottom of the piece near the mark. The edges are often hand-painted in gold to bring out the exquisite detail in the ruffled scallops. The Monbijou line is pure Art Nouveau with flowing lines and graceful design, and was actually named after the Rococo style Summer Home of Sophia Dorthea, wife of Frederick William I and located in Berlin. Mon Bijou was known for its charming gardens, but unfortunately, the chateau was reduced to rubble during World War II, never to be rebuilt.
