Description
The AEAA is very proud to present this exceptional full sized, 1930s Bavarian porcelain transfer and hand painted portrait plate of the famed Queen Louise of Prussia wearing her perennial scarf (see history below). This spectacular plate features a deep forest green ground, magnificent Queen Louise transfer, and beautifully accented with gilt highlights and medallions in the band. The rim showcases a unique sculpted and swag border, completed in a wonderful cream Luster finish. Our Bavarian portrait treasure weighs 1# 4 oz. and measures 10.5 x 10.5 x 1 inch deep.Queen Louise (1776 – 1810) was painted by Madame Vigee Lebrun in two poses, both a head and full body, but always with a modest scarf around her neck, to conceal a goiter that was inoperable in those days. Born Louise of Meckiburg-Strelitz in 1793, she fell in love & married Frederick William III at 18 years of age, and became a heroine to her people with her steadfast defiance and regal stature during the Napoleonic Wars. The Treaties of Tilsit (East Prussia) were signed here in July 1807, the preliminaries of which were settled by the emperors Alexander I of Russia and Napoleon I of France on a raft moored in the Neman River. This treaty, which created the Kingdom of Westphalia and the Duchy of Warsaw, completed Napoleon's humiliation of the Kingdom of Prussia, when it was deprived of one half of its dominions. This short-lived peace-treaty is also remarkable for quite another reason. Three days before its signing, Prussian Queen Louise tried to persuade Napoleon in a private conversation to ease his hard conditions on Prussia, thereby debasing herself at Tilsit, by bowing to Napoleon and literally begging him to have compassion for her people. Although without any tangible result, Louise's effort greatly endeared her to the Prussian people forever, and established a new respect in Napoleon, for a Queen that he had always regarded as totally inept.
