Item Details
Description
We are very pleased to offer this 1936-1940 Westmoreland (7) piece set of Gillinder 19th century running stag, charging bison & cabin stemmed frosted cordials, from the original Westward Ho pattern. We have compared photos of the original models, with our 3 seam mold blown set, and the differences are subtle but documentable. Nonetheless, our fine frosted set is an excellent mid 20th century collectible. These excellent condition cordials stand 2 x 2 x 4.25 inches with a total weight of 2# 3 oz. xxxxxxxxxxxxx. Gillinder & Sons was founded in 1861 in Philadelphia, PA., and initially produced plain, molded & cut Flint Glass Ware in many varieties. In the American Centennial year of 1876, Gillinder built an exhibition glass factory on the Philadelphia Centennial fairgrounds, so visitors could see huge glass smelters, as well as the actual production of glass souvenirs. The factory was a tremendous success, and one of the exhibitions most popular attractions, as this was the time of the introduction of (among 24 other centennial items including the famed Cinderella slipper), the fabled frosted Flint lion compote, which was mass produced in 1877. In 1888, the factory had expanded sufficiently to force a move to Greensburg, PA., where Gillinder operated until 1891, when they joined the US Glass Co. as Factory G. This company still operates today as Gillinder Glass in Port Jervis, NY (at the crossroads where PA., N.Y., and N.J. intersect meet). One of their more collectable patterns was called “Leaf” by the factory, but has since become known as “Maple Leaf”. Original Flint glass Gillinder pieces will glow a warm blue due to the lead content, but later 20th century reproductions will be sterile under black light.
