Originally titled "The Water-Cure Journal", launched in 1851 to promote alternative means of curing and preventing disease without the use of drugs, the monthly periodical was renamed "Herald of Health" in 1863, during the Civil War, with broader content about health issues and "physical culture" - hygiene, rearing children, caring for the sick, a healthy vegetarian diet and the evils of alcohol, as well as recipes and even poetry. The journal continued until the turn of the century and beyond.
