Four larger illustrations include: Wreck of Steamship Tenessee [sic[ Indian Cove, March 6th, 1853; Wreck &; Burning of the Steamer Independence, Island Margarita, Feby. 16th, 1853, 150 Lives Lost; Collapse of Flue on Board Henny Lind Off San Francisquito, April 11th, 1853, 50 Lives Lost; Wrech of Propellor [sic] Steamship S.S. Lewis, Duxbury Reef, April 9th, 1853. There is a small vignette at center, Explosion R.K. Page Nicolaus, Feather River March 12st 1853, and a smaller vignette a top center of California and her bear in black wreath. A sad chronicle of the tenuous nature of navigation on the seas and rivers during the California Gold Rush. Baird 53.
