Description
BACHMANN, John (1814-1896). Birds’ Eye View of New-Orleans. New-York: J. Bachmann, 1851. Frame: 38 x 47 inches. Sheet size: 26 ¼ x 35 ½ inches. Magnificent sweeping chromolithographed regarded as “one of the most ambitious mid-nineteenth-century views of New Orleans” (Magill, Printmaking in New Orleans), float mounted and framed. The Mississippi River in the foreground is teeming with steamboats, trade ships, and small boats that all appear in incredible detail, signaling the booming industry of the region. While Bachmann depicted the overall layout of the city with precision, he exaggerated the heights and sizes of landmark buildings to render them more easily recognizable.
