Description
Kava Bowl from the Island of Fiji. Kava or kava-kava (Piper methysticum), known in Fiji as Yaqona, is a crop plant, the roots of which are used to produce a drink with sedative and anesthetic properties. It is a popular part of the culture of the islands of the South Pacific and Polynesia (Samoa, Tonga, Fiji, Hawaii, Vanuatu and others). Hand carved from one large piece of native exotic wood, very stable. Four legs. Similar bowls are used in 'Ava ceremonies in Samoa. Antique, circa early 1900's. Provenance: Leo and Lillian Fortess Collection. Measurements: Approx. 16.5" diameter (across), 5.5" high
