"Una Via Romana Antica con Temporalo Distante". Eugene Berman as born in 1899 in St. Petersburg, Russia and became a painter known for his imaginary landscapes and for his Baroque stage sets for ballets and the Metropolitan Opera in New York. He was fascinated by solitary figures amidst ruins, and much of his work explored space and the passing of time. In Berman's paintings, he showed his fascination with architecture, a subject that he often explored eerie landcapes. He toured Europe extensively, especially Italy, to learn more about architecture and developed a special interest in the Baroque architectural drawings of Giovanni Guercino. Berman died in 1972 in Rome, Italy, and his work can be seen in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Fine Arts Museum of Boston and many others.
