Rosa Corder, (1853-1893)
Rosa Frances Corder was a painter of portraits and racehorse scenes. She studied under Felix Moschelles and Frederick Sandys and had a studio in London and Newmarket. She was described by the famous actress, Ellen Terry as “one of those plain beautiful women who are far more attractive than some of the pretty ones. She had wonderful hair like a fair pale veil, a white waxen face and a very good figure.” Corder was a friend of the great American artist, James McNeill Whistler (1834-1903). His full-length portrait of her “Arrangement in Black & Brown” is one of the treasures of the Frick Collection, New York. Works by Corder are in the Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool and Keble College, Oxford.
Fred Archer, (1857-1886)
Fred Archer has been described as the greatest flat race jockey of all time. He won a total of 3728 races, including The Derby on five occasions, The St. Leger six times, The Oaks four times, The 1,000 Guineas twice, and the 2,000 Guineas four times. He won the most prestigious race in France, the Prix du Jockey Club, in 1880 and 1883. He was Champion Jockey from 1871 to 1886. Half of his classic wins were on horses owned by Lord Falmouth. Like Rosa Corder, he lived in Newmarket, Cambridgeshire, the centre of equestrian sport in England.
