1799 Alexander Hamilton Letter as Second in Command and as Major General of the American Army
ALEXANDER HAMILTON, Framer and Signer of the Constitution, Secretary of the Treasury under Washington, Second in Command of the American Army under Washington (1798-99).
July 8th, 1799-Dated Federal Period, Letter Signed, “A. Hamilton” at New-York, to “Major Adlum” (Commanding Officer - Reading, Pennsylvania), 1 page, measuring 9” x 7.25”, Choice Very Fine. In his important position of Major General, tasked with organizing the new American Army, and as its acting Inspector General, Alexander Hamilton sends, in full:

“Sir, --- You will be pleased to inquire of Captain Shoemaker and Lieut. Booth whether they have any unexpended supply of money and Cloathing (sic.) for continuing the recruiting service, And report to me accordingly. - With great consideration I am Sir, -- yr. obedient sevt. -- (Signed) A. Hamilton”

Boldly signed by Hamilton in vivid, deep dark brown ink measuring 2” long, his signature being most prominent upon this page. Some early repair to the torn outer far left margin where the letter’s wax seal was torn open, being away from, and not affecting any text whatsoever. All text is in rich dark brown ink which remains very clear and easily readable. Here, Hamilton in his role as Major General, only Second in Command of the American Army under George Washington, and dated only five months prior to Washington’s death.
Alexander Hamilton was called back into the military service of his country upon the specific request of George Washington and Congress in 1798. This was in response to fears that war would break out between the United States and the French, due to the French seizure of American shipping and men possibly leading to an invasion during the “Quasi-War” with France. President John Adams was persuaded to create a new army with ex-President George Washington in command. Washington insisted that Adam’s nemesis, Alexander Hamilton, as Inspector General with the rank of Major General, and as such, he was second in command of the Army.
