Hand-Colored Engraving of Seneca Indian Chief Red Jacket
c. 1880, Copperplate Hand-Colored Engraving of Seneca Indian Chief Red Jacket by Seth Eastman, Very Fine.
This print is from a Copper Plate Engraving done by Seth Eastman, a West Point Instructor who spent five years working on a complete cataloging of all the Native American tribes that resided (or had resided) in the United States. It measures 12.5” x 9.5”, matted to 14.25” x 12”. This illustration depicts Red Jacket, a Seneca chief best remembered for his oratorical skills. He is perhaps responsible for first calling alcohol “firewater.” The print has some spotting and toning, but is still quite clear and vibrantly colored.
