Elegant set with finely worked details
This sterling silver tea and coffee set was made in Birmingham in 1837 by Spooner, Painter & Co. It comprises a teapot, a coffee pot, a creamer, a sugar bowl. The four pieces feature a gadrooned pear-shaped body resting on delicate feet. The handles are adorned with acanthus decoration. The handles of the pots are fitted with two insulating rings made of bone. The covers are crowned by finials in the form of a blossoming flower. The creamer and the sugar pot are gilded on the inside. The duty mark still shows the face of King William, although Queen Victoria ascended to the throne in 1837. This aspect makes the ensemble a special collector’s piece.
Every piece is hallmarked with duty mark, Birmingham city mark, maker's mark ‘S P & Co’, date letter ‘O’ (1837) and sterling standard.
The set is in good condition with minor signs of wear. The teapot measures 19.5 cm in height, the coffee pot measures 24.5 cm. The total weight is approx. 3,161 grams.
