Eccentric French figural clock with rare depiction of a floating goddess – the scene can also be interpreted as Birth of Venus

This picturesque Blot & Drouard figural pendulum clock was presumably made around 1880 in France. It is fitted with a round Marti brass movement with spring balancer and lever escapement with half hour strike on bell. The running duration is one week. The black marble dial shows roman hours and brass hands. The lunette is glazed facetted. A black octagonal marble base carries a fluted column stub of patinated white metal cast, which holds the movement cylinder and is decorated with a garland of ivy at the obverse. Above that hovers Hemera, goddess of daytime, on a plinth decorated with two fishes within waves. Her hair is embellished with flowers and she is wearing a delicately draped garment. She is carrying some flowers in her hand. The skin of the goddess is bronze tinted. Included is a key and a pendulum.

The movement is signed with the marks ‘MEDAILLE DE BRONZE S. Marti et Cie’, ‘BLOT&DROUARD / PARIS’, ÄE.D’ and the numbers ‘831’ and ‘5 5’. The pendulum clock is in a good condition. The marble base shows some chips. The dimensions are approx. 60 x 23 x 23 cm. During in house testing the clock was fully functional. Long term precision and regularity cannot be guaranteed. (nlu)
