Fine and well preserved verdure of one of the most famous Belgian tapissier families

This decorative verdure was made ??in the mid-18th century by Daniel III Leyniers (active 1729-1768) in Brussels presumably after a painting by David Teniers II the Younger (1610-1690). Such as the famous tapestries of the 17th century, Aubusson and Beauvais, the Brussels tapestries often referred to paintings by David Teniers. The present wall hanging impresses with the highly detailed and fine figural scene, showing winegrowers in front of a round arch bridge within a landscape setting. A few women wear the grapes in butts, and a cooper is shown at work. In the foreground a group of farmers have a break, and a few tools are scattered around them. In the background, the finished product is removed in wine barrels on ships. The wanderers depicted on the bridge are another nice detail. This is a high quality tapestry that brings along a piece of French history!

The wall hanging is in good condition considering its age, showing slight wear at the lower and the left margin and some color fading. The dimensions are 336 x 155 cm.

Daniel III Leyniers (active 1729-1768)

Daniel III Lenyniers came from a family of carpet weavers, which ran one of the most prolific and famous carpet factories in Belgium during the second half of the 17th century. In 1729, Daniel entered the workshop of his father, Urban Leyniers. He took it over in 1745 and led it until 1768.

David Teniers II (1610-1690)

The Flemish painter David Teniers II (the Younger) was born in Antwerp and studied with his father David Teniers I (the Elder). His later works show an influence of Peter Paul Rubens and Adriaen Brouwer. In 1633, Teniers was a member of the Guild of St. Luke in Antwerp. In 1651, he came to Brussels as a court painter, being in charge of the art collection of Archduke Leopold Wilhelm. For him, he created to the so-called ‘Theatrum pictorum’ in 1660, probably the first illustrated catalog of a collection of paintings. In 1664, Tenier founded the Antwerp Academy. David Teniers II was a very prolific artist, and his oeuvre includes tavern scenes, kermesses, guard rooms, alchemist and witch kitchens as well as biblical scenes. His genre scenes were extremely popular with art collectors of his time. Today, many of his works hang in almost every well-known art gallery, for example, in the Berlin and Dresden Paintings Gallery, the Uffizi in Florence, the Hermitage in St. Petersburg, the Museo del Prado in Madrid, the Louvre and the Kunsthistorische Museum in Vienna.
