Description
BURGESS GUY: (1911-1963) British-born Intelligence Officer and Double Agent who worked for the Soviet Union. One of the Cambridge Five. Scarce A.L.S., Guy, on the verso of a Russian postcard featuring a colour illustration of the Ukraine hotel to the recto, n.p. (Moscow), n.d. (February 1959), to George H[utchinson]. Burgess writes to British journalist Hutchinson, in Room 1608 of the Hotel Ukraine, stating, '6.30 punct was the time. Your absence was marked & total. I have left parcels with W. N. EWER (1617) in case you continue to let me down. Ugh!' and in a postscript remarks 'I know probably not your fault'. Accompanied by a carbon copy of a typed letter from Hutchinson to Harold Evans, one page, 8vo, Hotel Ukraine, Moscow, 23rd February 1959, providing some background to Burgess's note. The letter states, in part, 'I saw Guy Burgess last night, and he asked me to convey a message to the Prime Minister. I told him that I would pass it today to a member of the Prime Minister's staff, and I do so now. Burgess's mother is ill and he would like to visit her for a month. The Soviet Government would not object, he tells me. But he is afraid that the British authorities might seize his passport once he landed in England and prevent him from coming back to Russia...' Some light folds and creasing to the postcard, G to VG, 2
Harold Evans (1928- ) British Journalist and Writer, Editor of The Sunday Times 1967-81 during which time an investigative report exposed Kim Philby as a Soviet Spy.
In 1959, when a British delegation led by Prime Minister Harold Macmillan was visiting Moscow, Burgess contacted members of the group asking permission to return to Britain and visit his dying mother. Informed by telegram, the then Attorney General for England and Wales, Sir Reginald Mallingham-Buller, admitted that there was insufficient evidence to arrest and prosecute Burgess for treason. The British delegates withheld this from Burgess and his mother died without seeing her son again.
