This finely carved phoenix is carrying a cup on its back and is decorated with smaller phoenixes on each side wing. In its long curved tail is a taotie monster face, and there are two four-toed claws as the base. The cup on phoenix's back imitates an archaic bronze jue vessel in form and has a taotie monster face decoration on each side. Two rings hang freely suspended from a scrolling decoration on the underside of the cup's spout, and from the phoenix's wattle. Approx. 7 1/2 by 5 1/2 in., 19 by 14 cm.
