Folio (cm 32,5 x 23); contemporary full vellum, with four raised bands spine (light trace of use, neat repairs at spine and corners), handwritten title at spine; pp. (60), 608; text in Latin, printed in two columns.
Title-page in red and black types, with a large engraving containing a beautiful view of Venice in a nice frame decorated with arms, puttos and allegorical figures; engraved head and -tail pieces, engraved headletters.

First Venetian edition of the renowned commentary to the Justinian's Institutions written by Ioannes Oinotomos (Johann Shneidewein), first printed in 1573 and re-issued tenths of times along the following two centuries. The text is organized according to the theories of Protestant Reform, whose application Martin Luther charged Philip Melanchton.

Johann Schneidewein (Oinotomos)(1519-1568), was a famous German jurist, scholar of Martin Luther at Wittenberg. He followed his teacher all along his life, obtaining prestigious political and academic tasks, in the German protestant electorate. He considered a fake the donation of Constantine and, consequently, he deemed illegitimate the temporal power of the Roman papacy.

Provenance: Contemporary handwritten annotations (not identified) at margins and both fly-leaves.
