The fantastic painting defines the pagan chaos of a night with evil spirits, witches and demons flying through an eerie sky while the towering, fearsome “Chernabog” directs lost souls from atop Bald Mountain. This unforgettable segment in Fantasia paired the music of Petrovich Mussorgsky’s “Night on Bald Mountain” with the iconic “Chernabog” and the two remain difficult to separate to this day. Painted by renowned Disney artist Kay Nielsen who, in addition to painting, was a set designer and muralist. This painting was originally part of a studio model sheet for animator’s to use as a reference guide in creating this favorite sequence in Fantasia and has been published in a variety of Disney books over time.
